Minato (港区 Minato-ku?) is one of the 23 special wards of Tokyo, Japan. As of 1 March 2008, it had an official population of 217,335 and a density of 10,865 persons per km². The total area is 20.34 km².

Minato hosts 49 embassies. It is also home to various companies, including Honda, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, NEC, Sony[1], Fujitsu[2] and Toshiba.

Geography

Minato is located southwest of the Imperial Palace and has boundaries with the special wards of Chiyoda, Chūō, Kōtō (in Odaiba), Shinagawa, Shibuya, and Shinjuku.

History

The ward was founded on March 15, 1947 with the merger of Akasaka, Azabu, and Shiba Wards.

Politics and Government

Minato is governed by mayor Masaaki Takei, an Independent supported by all major parties except the Japanese Communist Party. The city legislative assembly has 51 members and is dominated by the Liberal Democratic Party.

Mita Junior High School

The city's public elementary and junior high schools are operated by the Minato City Board of Education ([1] in English, [2] in Japanese).

Mita Junior High School (三田中学校 Mita Chūgakkō?) opened in 2001 after the merger of Minato Junior High School (港中学校) and Shibahama Junior High School (芝浜中学校). (JA)

The local public high schools are operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Board of Education.

There are also a variety of private schools, including the Friends School, a Quaker school established in 1887.

Public libraries

The city operates the Minato Library, the Mita Library, the Azabu Library, the Akasaka Library, the Takanawa Library, and the Konan Library.[3] The metropolis operates the Tokyo Metropolitan Library Central Library in Minato. The library opened in 1973.[4]

Companies with headquarters in Minato include Air Nippon,[5] All Nippon Airways (ANA),[6][7] ANA & JP Express,[8] All Nippon Airways Trading,[9] Animax,[10] Asmik Ace Entertainment,[11] Dentsu,[12] Fujifilm,[13] Fuji Xerox,[14] Fujitsu,[15] Japan Tobacco,[16] Kajima,[17] Konami,[18] Kyodo News,[19] Mitsubishi Motors,[20] Mitsui Chemicals,[21] Mitsui O.S.K. Lines,[22] Mitsui Oil Exploration Company,[23] NEC,[24] Nippon Cargo Airlines,[25] NYK Line,[26] Pizza-La,[27] The Pokémon Company,[28] Sega Sammy Holdings,[29] Sigma Seven,[30] Sony,[31] Toyo Suisan (owns the branch Maruchan),[32] and TV Tokyo.[33] In addition ANA subsidiary Air Japan has some offices in Minato.[34]

Foreign companies

The Japanese division of CB&I,[35] the Japanese division of Aramark and Aim Services,[36] Yahoo! Japan,[37] and the main Japanese offices of Hanjin and Korean Air are located there.[38] Air France operates an office and ticketing counter in the New Aoyama Building in Minato.[39] Air France's Minato office handles Aircalin-related inquiries.[40] Air China has operations in the Air China Building in Minato.[41] Asiana Airlines operates a sales office on the sixth floor of the ATT New Tower Building.[42] Hawaiian Airlines has its Japan offices in the Eagle Hamamatsuchō Building (イーグル浜松町ビル Īguru Hamamatsuchō Biru?) in Minato.[43]

At one point Alaska Airlines maintained an office in Chiyoda.[44]

Former economic operations

Japanese companies that formerly had headquarters in Minato include Air Next,[45] Airtransse,[46] Asatsu,[47] Jaleco Holding,[48][49] Ricoh,[50][51] Toa Domestic Airlines (later Japan Air System),[52][53][54]

On December 22, 2008 operations of Seiko Epson's Tokyo sales office began at Seiko Epson's Hino Office in Hino, Tokyo. Previously operations were at the World Trade Center in Minato.[55][56]
